The (almost) #StopBurningStuff camping trip

With an electric campsite, why cook on propane? Driving an EV? Well, seems were doing a zero emissions camping trip. Well almost, the kids still insisted on smores over a campfire. We made most of our meals on a portable induction cook-top, but I also brought along my airfrier which can double as an oven. This allowed us to make all sorts of things, brownies, doughnuts, or just toast, without burning anything.

We went to Presquile provincial park, about 150 km east of Toronto along Lake Ontario. There is lots of charging along the way, Port Hope ONroute has a 4 charger Ivy station, Colborg, and Bowmanville also have charging (more on the route here). My 2018 Leaf can make it to Presquile without any charging stops, even with a full camping load (roofbox and all). I do have to take it easy on the 401 with the roofbox installed, as the manufacturer recommends no more than 130 km/hr, I tend to stick to the speed limit, particularly as the roofbox does subtract from the excellent aerodynamics of the Leaf. The Big apple does have a lone Tesla destination charger, which I did use on the way back with my Telsa to J1772 adapter.

There was plenty of space in the Leaf’s trunk for both my tent, dining tent, induction stove, air-frier/owen, and a whole lot of other camping gear. Particularly when you add the roofbox, fluffy light stuff can easily go up there, freeing up more space in the trunk. We did bring our tent heater which helped as Saturday was quite wet. A small space heater can really make for a cozy tent on rainy days. Picking a good space heater for camping is quite the art, ours has a thermostat, and also a tip-over switch, two helpful safety features.

After a lovely few days at Presquile, it was time to head back to the city, we used the high-amperage plug on the electric campsite to charge the car overnight. As before we did not need to charge on the way back, but as the Big Apple was at the right time for a Lunch stop, why not charge a little as you feast on fine country fare.
