Windsor

About 400 km south-west of Toronto sits the city of Windsor. Across the river from Detroit. We found a surprisingly vibrant city with many historic sites of interest. From the almost complete Gordie Howe bridge, to the underground railroad and a neat aviation museum . There is plenty to do.

There is ample charging between Toronto and London. A bit more along the “lower” QEW-403-401 route, than the “upper” Gardiner-427-401 route. Although there is some around Milton and Cambridge. While there are a couple of Onroute Ivy chargers along the 401 between London and Windsor, it’s best to ensure you leave London with the charge your EV needs to reach Windsor. Thankfully, the Flo station near the 401 in London is huge, with 8 cabinets, along with food and washrooms available nearby.

We had a wonderful time in Windsor, there are not many places in the world where you can see a suspension bridge under construction. These things are usually built, starting with the large pylons, then one “step” at a time, growing from the pylons and meeting in the middle. Across the river you can enjoy a wonderful view of downtown Detroit, interestingly, I found that the GM building looked like a stack of batteries, a good sign, as GM has produced fine EVs in the past, and continues to grow their EV portfolio.

We ran into some charging trouble on the way back. The Onroute Ivy station in Cambridge was having some issues, so we limped down the road to a Chargepoint, which also had problems. Thankfully that Chargepoint site had a L2 charger that worked, and got us enough charge to limp down the road to a Flo station in Milton that worked very well. It goes to say, that its helpful to plan for some alternatives, as charging can be a bit of an adventure. But no matter, we had a great time on our trip.
