As we start waxing the skis for the upcoming ski season, its time to have a peak at the used EV market. While new EVs can be quite expensive used ones can be quite a bargain, to a point where the whole ownership equation changes financially putting EVs in the lead. As before we set our price roof at $35k, and a 100 km distance from Toronto. This time we actually have some new cars in our survey, meet the Fiat 500 e.
A word on methodology. We use autotrader.ca mostly as its the one I know, it does filters for both electric cars, price, and location. Although you must be careful as sometimes hybrids sneak through the filter. There are many other sites that help people trade used cars, Clutch, Car gurus and Kajiji to name a few, some of those might work better for you. For each model we find, we need at least three entries in order to make the list, mostly as a way to discourage one offs (say a vehicle that has been driven to the ends of the earth and back several times over, or crash damage). We also limit our geographical search to 100 km away from Toronto. As before we set a hard price limit of $35 000 CAD. Mostly as if your budget is higher, it makes a lot of sense to consider new.

As before, there is ample choice of gently used EVs looking for a new home, 589 of them in fact, lots of choice. Interestingly half of them are Tesla Model 3s. We are starting to see some luxury EVs entering our survey, the Audi E-tron, Tesla Model S and Model X. While often feature packed with value, shoppers are reminded that parts can be quite expensive on luxury vehicles, hence a small fender bender or a minor issue like a broken charge flap can easily render your new EV beyond economical repair (source), but if you are handy, there is lots of value in a used luxury EV.
The Fiat 500e is a noteworthy newcomer to our list, its actually a new car, admittedly a small one, but for the commuter, the senior, the student needing something inexpensive to take them around town, its hard to find a more efficient vehicle for the task at hand. That low price-point also means the economics might be in favour of the EV.
