Tobermory

At the tip of the Bruce peninsula sits Tobermory. Ever wanted to walk the deck of a 100 + year old boat? Explore the steam engine’s of the day? Then Tobermory is your chance. There is lots to do and see, with charging in both Orangeville and Owen Sound, the 300 km route is no problem for a used EV such as the Nissan Leaf. Several hotels even have charging available (The Tobermory Princess, and the Grandview have L2 chargers).

Most of the 300 km route to Tobermory is on secondary roads with posted speed limits of 80 km/hr. The Nissan Leaf is very happy cruising along at 80 km/hr and as we explored earlier, slower speeds get you much further on a given kWh of electricity. I suspect If I drove slow enough, my 2018 Nissan Leaf could make it straight to Tobermory without charging. But the kids usually get hungry around Orangeville, and apparently require a sugar injection around Owen sound. As it happens, there are chargers in these two locations, might as well charge the car and the kids at the same time.

Charging is available in Orangeville (~ 90 km out of Toronto) with both a pair of L2 stations in the downtown parking lot, and a L3 station near the courthouse. Owen sound (~ 110 km out of Orangeville) also sports a pair of Ivy stations.

I have stayed at the Grandview in the past, when I did, they had a pair of outside plugs I used to charge my 2015 Nissan Leaf (I was doing the Georgian bay loop see this post). Since then they have added a pair of L2 stations, plenty to fully charge your car overnight. We did swim out to the tugs which are pretty awesome. Swimming around a 100 year old + boat is really cool. The kids fancied a larger boat, so we hopped on a snorkeling charter through Divers Den to swim around the Sweepstakes and the Whitmore, two larger vessels that rest in Tobermory’s Big tub harbor.

The ChiChiMan ferry can take you and your EV to Manitoulin Island if you desire a more relaxed adventure. Also the Tugs are just outside Tobermory’s little tub harbor, and if you bring your swimsuit, you can swim out to the shipwrecks from the Tugs access point by the Grandview Motel.

After a refreshing weekend in Tobermory, it was time to head back to the city, we took the same route back, stopping again in Owen sound for lunch at the nearby Tim Hortons, and a quick stop for treats in Orangeville.
