Fall 2024, used EV survey

As we start sharpening the skis, and putting on winter tires, its time for the fall 2024 used EV survey. As before, we set our price roof to $35 000, and geographical search parameters to 100 km from Toronto. Its a very good time to buy a used EV, its never been this good. We see Tesla increasing its share quite dramatically, in particular the Tesla Model 3, if you are in the market for a used Tesla Model 3, you have a few hundred contenders to choose from. We also welcome the worlds best selling car (source), the Tesla Model Y to our survey.

A word on methodology. We use autotrader.ca mostly as its the one I know, it does filters for both electric cars, price, and location. Although you must be careful as sometimes hybrids sneak through the filter. There are many other sites that help people trade used cars, Clutch, Car gurus and Kajiji to name a few, some of those might work better for you. For each model we find, we need at least three entries in order to make the list, mostly as a way to discourage one offs (say a vehicle that has been driven to the ends of the earth and back several times over, or crash damage). We also limit our geographical search to 100 km away from Toronto. As before we set a hard price limit of $35 000 CAD. Mostly as if your budget is higher, it makes a lot of sense to buy new. You get a new shiny shiny, and thanks to incentives the price is not too different. In fact, with an manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) of $44 596, and a Canadian federal incentive of $5 000, a new 2025 40 kWh Nissan leaf is $39,596 just $4,596 more than our budget limit.

With that, lets see where we are:

There are in total 474 EVs looking for a new home, including some new arrivals: Fisker Ocean, Ford Mustang Mach E, Jaguar I-Pace and the Tesla Model Y. Granted, the Fisker Ocean is not for the faint of heart, given the well publicized troubles of the Fisker automotive group (source, and source). Nevertheless, that is opportunity for a fairly well equipped EV with a massive 110 kWh pack. Also new, is the worlds best selling car in 2023 (source).

My friends, we have never had it this good, the number of new models of all sizes and shapes that can be yours for as low as $5k! The selection and fauna of EVs on sale is just incredible.
