Spring 2025 Used EV survey

As the skis get put away, and the water toys come out, its time for another look at the used EV market. Its unbelievable how affordable used EVs have become. Need basic around town runabout, try a first gen Nissan Leaf for as little as 5k. Can you hold your nose as you drive a Tesla? Well, in that case there is lots of selection around, Model 3’s start at 17k, great deals abound on the model Y, and if driving a Tesla is not your thing, we welcome the Hyundai IONIQ5, Polestar 2, and the Toyota BZ4X.

A word on methodology. We use autotrader.ca mostly as its the one I know, it does filters for both electric cars, price, and location. Although you must be careful as sometimes hybrids sneak through the filter. There are many other sites that help people trade used cars, Clutch, Car gurus and Kajiji to name a few, some of those might work better for you. For each model we find, we need at least three entries in order to make the list, mostly as a way to discourage one offs (say a vehicle that has been driven to the ends of the earth and back several times over, or crash damage). We also limit our geographical search to 100 km away from Toronto. As before we set a hard price limit of $35 000 CAD. Mostly as if your budget is higher, it makes a lot of sense to consider new. While the Federal EV incentive has “paused” (source), and other incentives such as Quebec’s provincial incentive are ending too (source), dealers have started to offer discounts that are not far off from what your price would have been with these subsidies in place (source).

I am struck by the sheer selection, never before have we had so many models (26), from so many different brands (13). Why that’s an average of two EV’s per brand. New entries this spring are the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Polestar 2, the Tesla Model X, Toyota BZ4X and the ID.4. More choice than ever before. My friends, if you are not already driving electric, now is your chance to get into a new (or new to you), EV.
