Nissan Leaf: The family golf monster?

We recently found a dog friendly golf course, Lynbrook Family golf center. This required a through investigation, so we put all four sets of clubs, the dog and some snacks into my 2018 Nissan Leaf, which had no problems with all of this, and scooted off to the links. Four sets of clubs takes upContinue reading “Nissan Leaf: The family golf monster?”

What happened to the used EV market?

Last fall, I wrote a short market survey looking at inexpensive electric cars. Back in November 2021, a EV shopper in the Toronto area could have had their choice of gently used Nissan Leaf’s, Hyundai Ioniq, or a Kia Soul for less than $30 000. While there is still some selection, the market is tight.Continue reading “What happened to the used EV market?”

More Wind and Solar energy?

The environmental benefits of EV’s are greatly enhanced if they can be charged using renewable energy. However, the cheapest energy rates are often at night, not exactly peak solar power production time. The $25 000 EV is just about here!

I recently had a wonderful chat at a dinner party with a friend. Briefly, my friend was convinced that EV’s would take off immediately once an EV could be had for $25 000. A recent opinion post in the Edmonton sun suggested it was impossible to drive from Grand Prairie AB to Winnipeg MB in January. Setting aside why anyone would choose to drive the 1800km or so between the two when reasonably priced flights are available. I wondered as I read the column if Gunther (the nameContinue reading “The Gunther challenge: Can you drive an EV from Grand-Prairie AB all the way to Winnipeg MB in January?”

MacGregor Point Provincial park

Exploring Ontario’s “west-coast” would not be complete without a stop at MacGregor provincial park which sits along lake Huron, about 240 km drive from Toronto. The beach is nice, and there is lots of hiking and exploring to be done in the park. Curious about how your EV gets its juice? The nearby Bruce powerContinue reading “MacGregor Point Provincial park”

Is Chademo a dying standard?

Avid readers of this blog will note the importance of DC fast charging on long distance EV road-trips. As of 2022, very few new EV models offer Chademo connectors for DC fast charging, even Nissan appears to be switching to CCS for their fast charging connector on the upcoming Nissan Aryia. This might frighten someContinue reading “Is Chademo a dying standard?”
